Home Design Trends – Part 3: Smart Home Technologies

Home Design Technologies

With technology changing every minute, it’s no wonder that home design trends now include many smart home technology integrations.  According to Houzz.com, “Nearly half of homeowners are installing smart systems or devices during their renovation projects (45%), with the average renovating homeowner adding one smart system or device to the home in the course of a renovation.”  This trend will continue, as new technologies are offered.   In this article, we’ll review some of the latest home technology trends and what you’ll want to consider when buying, selling, or renovating your home.

Security

Homeowners are increasingly relying on technology to make their homes more secure.  Alarm systems used to be the #1 go-to for home security, but now there are plenty of DIY solutions and most of these systems don’t require a monthly maintenance fee!  Most DIY solutions provide the ability to monitor your home right from your phone.  Smart locks, video doorbells, lighting, and cameras are all easy and economical ways to keep an eye on your home while you’re away.

Voice-Control Technology

Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are providing you more and more access to connected devices in your home and many more manufacturers are integrating with these devices.  These devices allow you to control virtually everything in your home, but the latest technology also allows the devices to communicate with each other.  For example, if your smoke detector goes off, your oven can turn off.  This kind of thoughtful innovation is the next big trend for AI.

Maintenance Checks

Some of the most exciting trends help to identify if something is amiss in your home, before it causes major damage.  By monitoring super-low frequencies and sounds within your home, these devices are intended to create a baseline of your home’s normal sounds.  For example, let’s say you have a slow water leak in the basement.  The sound from the dripping water would be detected by the monitor and alert you to the possibility of a problem.

Health Sensors

Whether you are monitoring your sleep patterns, tracking your fitness, or ensuring that an elderly loved one has constant monitoring, there are a plethora of devices to explore.   Also trending this year are devices that help monitor the air and water quality in your home.
