Millennials are quickly becoming one of the largest and most powerful buying audiences.  Now that they are finally becoming homeowners, the Millennials choices are beginning to influence home design trends in a big way.  In this article, we’ll explore some of those trends and choices that are going to shape our homes for the foreseeable future.

Different than their baby boomer parents, the Millennial population is driven by sustainability, efficiency, and practicality.  So, they are often choosing homes that are smaller in size and located closer to city centers.  Since their homes are smaller, minimalistic design is common.  This helps reduce clutter, create a more skillful use of space, and often maximizes the space available with creative storage options.

The Millennial home is often designed with more natural elements as well.   Reclaimed wood has always been great for flooring or an accent wall but millennials are combining wood and metal elements for a rustic-tech chic style.  This style combines old and new and offers many opportunities to use recycled or reclaimed materials throughout the home, along with newer modern materials.

And, it should come as no surprise that Millennials are using technology to simplify home functions, create more efficiencies, and ultimately be more sustainable.   Their homes will likely include a home office, command centre or tech space since they often work virtually.

Millennials choices in materials for the home are heavily influenced by the environmental impact and durability of the product.   Give them the choice of cararra marble or engineered stone, and they’ll likely choose the stone because it will last longer and won’t stain.
